Lead Sub-Oxide / Grey Oxide It is a grayish khaki coloured power consisting of metallic lead power, partly oxidized so as to make a mixture of finely divided metallic lead and lead oxide in close combination. The free lead content can be varied to suit different requirements. The product is extremely prone to oxidation and sensitive to moisture, the latter causing further oxidation with evolution of heat. Grey Oxide in tropical conditions can be stored only in air tight drums. The free lead in Grey Oxide tends to oxidize rapidly in contact with atmosphere and it is, owing to this, that the top layer in drums is often found to have a yellowish colour due to its contact with enclosed air in sealed drums. Open and or/ leaky drums allow oxidation and change in composition of Grey Oxide. Hence, it is advisable to use up the contents of such drums quickly. In case of very rapid oxidation, the chances of fire cannot be ruled out completely. Standards : There are no published standards for Grey Oxide, often referred to as Uncalcined, high metallic oxide for erroneously. Lead Sub- Oxide. Major battery manufacturers specify their requirements of Grey Oxide in terms of free lead , acide absorption, apparent density etc. Typical composition and physical properties: Grade Positive Standard Negative Metallic Lead ( %) 25-30 30-35 35-40 Scott Density ( gms/cc) 12.0- 13.5 13.5 – 4.0 14.0 – 15.5 Acid Absorption ( mg/gm ) 170 - 190 140 - 170 120 – 140 Water Absorption ( mg / gm ) 110 – 130 130 – 140 140 – 150 The properties of Grey Oxide vary with the metallic lead content as apparent from the foregoing specifications for various grades and the behaviors can be summed up as follows : 1. With increase in Free Lead Acid Absorption decreases 2. With increase in Free Lead Scott Density increase 3. With increase in Free Lead Particle size coarsens 4. With increase and consequently residue on screen increases. For Grey Oxide , the residue on 63 Micron I.S Sieve can vary from 1-10% depending in Free Lead content. Grey Oxide can be manufactured to customers specification with Free Lead content varying between 20-45% and sometimes against special orders with free lead content as high as 60% . Such high metallic Grey Oxide must be consumed immediately after manufacture. Application : The only use of Grey Oxide is in the manufacture of pastes for battery plates. The method of manufacture of Grey Oxide gives a product containing a proportion of metallic lead in a fine state of division which readily oxidize when the Grey Oxide is made into a paste with water and sulfuric acid. Lead Sub-Oxide / Grey Oxide Lead Sub-Oxide (2PbO.Pb.H2O), also commercially known as Grey Oxide / Battery Oxide is used on an extensive scale for preparation of plates in Lead Acid Batteries which requires production to strict specifications. Refined Lead (Minimum 99.97% purity) is required input for our Grey Oxide manufacturing plant, which uses the Ball Mill process and has below specifications: ATTRIBUTE COMPOSITION Color Blackish to Greenish Grey Crystal Structure Tetragonal Apparent Density 1.4 - 1.6 Retention on 240 mesh (63 micron) (max %) 0.1 Retention on 325 mesh % 2.0 Water Absorption mg/gm 110-120 Acid Absorption mg/gm 160-200 Free Lead (% Max) 25-40 Lead Monoxide (%) 60-75 Grey Oxide produced in Ball Mill Plant, which comprises of a small Lead Melting Furnace, operating in line with a hemispherical / cylindrical ball-casting machine, which feeds the balls to the ball mill. In the ball mill, Lead is converted to Lead Sub Oxide, which is an exothermic process. In this process heat is generated and temperature of a oxide is increase to control th |
